Abstract
The effect of hemocoagulaes-BSS Plus (1 NIH thrombin unit/100§¢ of BSS Plus) on the control of intraocular bleeding during vitrectomy was evaluated by patients with fibrovascular proliferations such as diabetic retinopathy and the recently traumatized eye. The mean intraocular bleeding time in 15 eyes infused with BSS Plus was 109¡¾24 seconds. The mean intraocular bleeding time for 15 eyes receiving hemocoagulase-BSS Plus was 35¡¾16 seconds. The shorter bleeding time in patients receiving hemocoagulase was significant to p<0.01 by the t-test. A comparison was made by ERGs and clinical observation between both cohorts. A comparison of the postoperative change on the b-wave amplitude, b/a ratio and the b-wave implicit time was made using the chi square test between Hc-BSS Plus cohort and BSS Plus cohort, and no disadvantage of Hc-BSS Plus infusate to BSS Plus infusate could be confirmed. Hemocoagulase infusate was not found to be toxic to the retinal tissue. Clinical study showed no adverse effect on the lens and visual acuity. It appeared to be a useful agent for the control of intraocular bleeding during vitrectomy surgery.
